About us
We are Entojutu. Promoting a healthy and sustainable change through our concept of a basic circular economy is our goal.
The Problem Statement
Waste management and food security are two interconnected global challenges. Organic waste, if not handled effectively, contributes to pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, many communities, particularly in developing regions, face food insecurity, limited access to sustainable agricultural resources, and economic hardship. Addressing these issues requires innovative solutions that bridge waste reduction, food production, and income generation.
Our Vision
At Entojutu, we envision African communities that are both sustainable and profitable, empowered by nature-based approaches. We aim to see a future where local economies thrive through harmony with the environment, creating lasting impacts for people and the planet.
Our Mission
Our mission is to create resilient, eco-friendly communities by:
- Empowering Communities: Providing tools and knowledge to help people lead sustainable enterprises.
- Redefining Waste: Transforming organic waste into valuable resources for growth and economic development.
- Sustainable Protein Production: Using nature-based solutions, like the Black Soldier Fly, to offer alternative, sustainable protein sources.
- Promoting a Circular Economy: Designing systems where waste is continually repurposed, benefiting the environment and economy.
- Resource Recovery: Extracting value from waste to nourish agricultural production and contribute to food security.
the challenges
What made us start Entojutu
- We Address Soil Degradation in Agriculture
Approximately 65% of Africa’s arable land suffers from degradation caused by poor agricultural practices. This leads to declining soil fertility, reduced water retention, and disrupted ecological processes, posing significant threats to food security, economic stability, and environmental sustainability. Addressing these challenges requires innovative approaches, such as Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming, which restores soil health and promotes sustainable land management. - We Provide Eco-Friendly, Nutrient-Rich Solutions
At Entojutu, we use BSF larvae to break down organic waste, creating frass—a natural fertilizer rich in essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. BSF frass replenishes soil, supports plant growth, and enhances beneficial microbial activity. It also improves soil structure, water retention, and nutrient availability. The chitin in BSF frass further stimulates beneficial microorganisms, strengthens plant defences, and enhances nitrogen retention, making it an ideal compound fertilizer for most crops.
- We Address Poverty in Agriculture
Agriculture employs 40% of Africa’s workforce, yet 80% of farmers earn only $300–$400 annually, leaving them in extreme poverty. Challenges such as hunger, unemployment, and high production costs persist, trapping millions in a cycle of poverty. Traditional practices and costly inputs strain resources and fail to provide sustainable solutions for smallholder farmers. - We Provide Sustainable, Affordable Solutions
Black soldier fly (BSF) farming offers a low-cost and sustainable way to improve livelihoods. Farmers can convert organic waste into high-protein feed and nutrient-rich fertilizer, reducing reliance on expensive fishmeal and imported inputs. This approach lowers production costs, improves agricultural yields, and empowers communities with steady incomes through larvae and fertilizer sales. Moreover, BSF farming addresses waste management challenges, creating jobs and promoting circular economies while reducing environmental harm.
- We Address Climate Change Challenges
The worsening climate crisis is fueled by rising greenhouse gases like methane and carbon dioxide. These emissions are linked to deforestation and poor bio-waste management. Africa loses 3.4 million hectares of forests annually while wasting up to 30% of its food. These practices amplify environmental degradation and global warming. - We Provide Sustainable Climate Solutions
At Entojutu, we fight climate change through Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming. BSF larvae decompose organic waste, such as food scraps and agricultural residues, preventing their disposal in landfills where they release methane, a gas with over 25 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide. This natural process significantly reduces methane emissions, helping mitigate the environmental impacts of waste mismanagement.
- We Address an Environmental Crisis
The growing population and industrial activities have placed immense pressure on natural resources, leading to environmental degradation. Organic waste, often mismanaged, contributes significantly to pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and the spread of pests and diseases. Traditional waste disposal methods, like landfilling and Burning, trigger these issues, harming ecosystems and public health. - We Offer Sustainable Solutions
Black soldier fly (BSF) larvae present a natural and scalable solution to organic waste management. These larvae efficiently consume and decompose organic materials, turning waste into nutrient-rich compost. This process reduces landfill reliance and mitigates methane emissions. Additionally, BSF larvae serve as a sustainable protein source for livestock, replacing environmentally harmful fishmeal and soy. This circular approach curbs waste and supports sustainable farming practices, creating a healthier planet for all.
Our Solution: The BSF Waste to Resource Initiative
BSF (Black Soldier Fly) Waste to Resource Initiative exemplifies our mission. By leveraging the unique life cycle of the Black Soldier Fly, we transform organic waste into valuable resources. The initiative focuses on three primary goals:
- Waste Reduction: Organic waste is converted into high-protein resources, reducing waste in landfills and minimizing environmental impact.
- Sustainable Food Production: The larvae produced from waste recycling become a sustainable source of protein for livestock, fish farming, and pet industries.
- Economic Empowerment: Communities involved in our program gain skills, create local businesses, and benefit economically from their participation in sustainable practices.
How It Works
Our model is grounded in empowering communities through the use of Black Soldier Flies. Here’s how we make a difference:
- 01. Waste Collection: We partner with local communities to collect organic waste that would otherwise go unused.
- 02. Conversion Process: Using Black Soldier Fly larvae, we transform this waste into nutrient-rich protein and fertilizer.
- 03. Resource Distribution: The resulting protein-rich biomass is utilized in agriculture, aquaculture, and pet food, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional feed. The byproduct, a natural fertilizer, supports local agricultural growth.
- 04. Economic Impact: Participants gain the skills to run their own micro-enterprises, improving their livelihoods and contributing to the local economy.
our 4-step Approach
Our solution is geared towards adoption because we believe change can only happen through a concerted effort by communities.
When farmers adopt this technology, organic waste is treated, and their cost of production can be reduced by up to 35%.
Stage 1: Demonstrate
Stage 2: Experience
Stage 3: Adopt
Stage 4: Leverage
Our Model
At Entojutu we demonstrate by using waste on a daily basis as a resource and using the black soldier fly larvae to treat the waste.
We bring the community farmers to an experiential learning by doing it themselves by training them from receiving waste to having their own black soldier fly to using the larvae to treat their own organic waste to harvesting products from this waste treatment process.
Adopt, we monitor and support the community farmers to integrate this technology into their farms using resources from their farms and communities and with the help of our monitoring team, we help them to scale up through partnership and mentoring.
Leverage, at this stage, knowing the technology will open the mind of the farmers to transition into using more eco-friendly methods and to teaching their communities therefore. Forming a community of nature based .
