Project Update: Entojutu Partners with IITA on HealthyDiets4Africa Initiative, Hosts Mercy Corps Team and Beneficiaries from Northeastern Nigeria
As part of the HealthyDiets4Africa initiative led by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Entojutu proudly hosted the Mercy Corps team and farmers from Northeastern Nigeria. This collaboration reinforced the importance of sustainable, eco-friendly solutions in food and feed production, particularly through the innovative use of black soldier flies (BSF) to convert organic waste into valuable resources.
During the visit, beneficiaries had a firsthand experience of Entojutu’s physical processes—sorting of fruits wastes, to feeding of bsf larvae and all other technical activities involved in the facility. These demonstrations highlighted how organic waste can be efficiently transformed into sustainable agricultural inputs, a game-changing approach to tackling food insecurity and environmental degradation.
As part of the learning experience, the team also visited the Central Abattoir, where they observed how organic waste is collected and repurposed. This visit emphasized the importance of waste recovery and management in sustainable food production, showing how discarded materials can be turned into valuable resources for both livestock feed and soil enrichment.
The site visits facilitated in-depth discussions on scaling up these sustainable methods in vulnerable regions, equipping farmers with the knowledge to implement similar solutions in their communities. Mercy Corps, known for its work in resilience-building, provided key insights on addressing food insecurity through sustainable innovation.
Through this initiative, Entojutu remains committed to promoting environmentally friendly farming practices by partnering with institutions like IITA and Mercy Corps. By enhancing local farmers’ skills, improving food safety, and fostering sustainable food systems, Entojutu is driving forward a vision where waste is transformed into opportunity, ensuring better nutrition, economic empowerment, and a more resilient agricultural future across Africa.
